Selective Maths: Frequently Asked Questions
What does the NSW Selective Mathematical Reasoning section test?
Mathematical Reasoning is a problem-solving test, not a calculation test. It covers number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability, but most questions are multi-step word problems that require logical reasoning. No calculators are allowed. It has 35 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes.
Is the Selective maths test just arithmetic?
No. It deliberately disguises arithmetic inside reasoning problems, rationing, comparison, working backwards, and pattern questions. A child strong at school maths can still struggle if they aren't used to multi-step word problems under time pressure without a calculator.
How should my child practise Selective maths?
Practise multi-step word problems under timed conditions and review every mistake by category, careless slip, concept gap, or a trap they missed. The samples on this page show the format; a free SelectiveGuru trial provides full timed sections with step-by-step AI explanations for every question.
